Chapter 13

Apart

Phoenix drove Dags back to his place sometime after noon.

She had to go in to one of the studios, since Phoenix had yet another movie in production, and they were beginning primary shooting the following week.

They didn’t take the bike that time.

Instead, she drove her beachier car, the Toyota Land Cruiser, offering to drop him off on her way to the studio. He’d already informed her they’d be taking his Mustang that night, when they went to Uri’s. His car had a better engine, and while it was unlikely to make much difference with an angelic being that flew, Dags wanted to drive his car anyway.

Besides, he’d wanted to go check on Carla, and David, her husband.

He also wanted to look at his options for weapons.

Despite all of these things, despite the sheer practicality of them splitting up for a few hours while Phoenix went to work and Dags took care of things before they went to Uri’s that afternoon, Dags struggled to leave her car when she pulled into the small driveway on the lower part of his property. He stared at the garden wrapped around his giant studio built into the hill, thinking of ways to do this without actually letting her go anywhere alone.

In the end, he looked at her.

She smiled back.

When he didn’t move, she reached for him.

Gripping his hair in her hand, the engine of the Toyota still rumbling under them, she leaned over from the driver’s side of the long bench and kissed him, using her tongue.

He kissed her back.

At some point, he slid over the bench.

He got close enough that both of them were half-against the steering wheel, and he had his hand wrapped around her crotch in the tight jeans she wore, even as he kissed her throat. She let out a gasping moan as he lifted his head, kissing her mouth again.

He had no idea how long they were doing that.

In the end, Steve McQueen whined, lifting his head for the first time from the back seat of the Land Cruiser, where he’d been curled up, dead asleep.

Hearing him, Phoenix pushed lightly on Dags’ chest, gasping a little.

She turned her head then, noting the time on the old-fashioned dashboard.

“I’m officially past fashionably late,” she informed him easily. “I’m now venturing into the edges of diva-esque late. Which I don’t normally do.” Biting her lip, she met his gaze, her expression reluctant. “I have to go. They’re going to think something happened. After Jamie, everyone’s on edge.”

She was flushed, still breathing hard, but he felt a flicker of embarrassment on her now.

“Sorry,” he said, feeling his own embarrassment surface.

“Sorry?” She snorted. “For what? I started it.”

Leaning back with an effort, he held up his hands, even as Steve McQueen whined again, now looking out the window at the garden filled with birds.

Dags shrugged, still feeling embarrassed.

“I haven’t exactly been… self-control guy lately.”

She laughed at that, half-incredulous. “You, huh? Only you? How interesting.”

At his quirked eyebrow, she smiled, shaking her head.

“We’ll have
